Alan McMorran

Managing Director

Alan McMorran is the founder and Managing Director of Open Grid Systems. He received his bachelors degree in Computer & Electronic Systems and a Ph.D. in Electronic & Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.  His Ph.D research work focussed on the application of Model Driven Architectures and IEC Common Information Model (CIM) to the power industry.

His post-doctoral research work included collaboration with Areva T&D (now part of GE), EDF R&D, and National Grid. In 2010 Alan founded Open Grid Systems, and since then has been involved in all parts of the business, developing software to help utilities collect, manage and share their data internally and externally using open IEC standards.

Since 2006 Alan has been the UK Principal Expert on IEC Technical Committee 57 working groups 13, 14, 16 and 19 that develop IEC 61968/61970/62325 that collectively form the IEC CIM. Alan is a visiting professor at Brunel University in London, and is the author of a number of papers relating to standards and model driven technologies for the power industry.

Susan Telford

Chief Engineering Officer

Susan is an accomplished engineer with extensive experience in the electrical engineering domain. Susan received her bachelors degree in Computer Science and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde before working as a post-doctoral research engineer.

Her research work focussed on the development of knowledge based systems to elicit and model meaningful knowledge regarding PD signal interpretation within high voltage equipment. This covered the full lifecycle of system development, knowledge elicitation, modelling, implementation, and analysis.

Since 2011 she has been an integral part of Open Grid Systems leading the development of the mobile applications portfolio, and supporting its deployment with major utilities.

Gordon Jahn

Chief Technical Officer

Gordon has over 20 years experience in the electrical industry. His Ph.D focussed on helping ensure ongoing safety of EDF Energy’s Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors and he has since held roles with Freescale (now part of NXP Semiconductors), and AMEC Foster Wheeler.

These roles have covered microcontroller programming and customer support, legacy control system upgrades and replacements in the nuclear industry, plant commissioning in oil and gas and company process improvements.

Since joining Open Grid Systems in 2016, Gordon has been heavily involved in product strategy and development and also spearheaded ISO certification acting as the Quality and Information Security Manager.
